Gerald Massey was an Egyptologist who wrote a tremendous body of scholarly work in the earliest part of the twentieth century. What he concluded was that much of Christianity and its belief structure can be found in far earlier forms of Egyptian mythology. At first this sounds like a rather strange theory. Upon hearing it, most people who've been brought up as Christians "turn the switch" on the idea, as it's often been termed. The idea is completely shut down without much consideration, if any. Too much has been invested in a sacred belief system to have it damaged or even destroyed in a couple of hours by one book. A defense mechanism kicks in and the idea is immediately shut down before it can melt down the core of Christian belief. Still, Massey is a highly welcome challenge to read because his research is so thorough.

Go ahead, venture outside that traditional "safety zone" and take in a new and interesting viewpoint. It's okay. Although it goes against the grain, one won't go to hell for trying to become educated with an alternative view. It is good to weigh all options, especially if they are intelligently presented.

A large number of people seem to agree with him, including some of the most respected scholars and researchers in the field of religious studies. So if you want a different and compelling view of Christianity and its roots, this is the book to read.
