Problem of Lemuria, The - The Sunken Continent of the Pacific
This book presents evidence that an advanced civilization once existed in the area of the Pacific Ocean in ancient times and, except for a tew remnants, has since vanished due to cataclysmic activity. It is Spence's counterpart to his acclaimed book The Problem of Atlantis (also available on this site). Spence admits that proof for the existence of Lemuria is less prevalent than for Atlantis, but claims it is just as solid. The research in this book covers all available evidence known for Lemuria by the author and bears out the fact that such a place must have existed.

The main "problem" of Lemuria is that the Pacific Ocean covers such a vast area and that Lemuria existed within this area such a long time ago. Yet Spence does a brilliant job in tracing the available clues we have back to where Lemuria was located and in showing us what it was like. He reveals supporting evidence disciplines including geology, archaeology, mythology, biology, linguistics (including word origins), and the transmission of various customs.

In writing this book, Spence was clearly ahead of his time. Modern research into Earth's cataclysmic activity is taking on new and more complete proportions. A larger picture is taking shape in which Spence's theories on both Atlantis and Lemuria fall into place almost perfectly. What we've been learning about the Earth's past both fascinating and chilling, since many scientists are convinced that a pole reversal or shift of the Earth's crust could happen at any time. Indications of this include a huge, continent-sized iceberg, and one a bit smaller, breaking off from our polar ice caps in the years 2001 and early 2002, respectively. The ice caps could be starting to slip, and of this we should be completely aware. Such an event would go far in explaining not only the sudden loss of Lemuria and Atlantis, but also for the Great Flood legend that is found in virtually every culture worldwide.

The recent discoveries of advanced underwater cities near India and Cuba strongly confirm Spence, since each has been initially dated to be over 6000 years old. If this is the case, then both cultures predate what we thought was the birth of human civilization. Radio carbon dating in India puts the site at about 9500 years old and the city near Cuba, being 2,200 feet deep, makes it possibly older.
