Book of Enoch the Prophet, The - Translation by R. H. Charles
SKU: 00093
The book wherein secret mysteries are revealed including the lost Books of Noah, the Prophecies of Enoch, particulars of Angelology and Demonology. Thought lost for millennia after being banned by dogmatic, early Christian authorities, The Book of Enoch remains one of the oldest extant mystical documents. It is referred to in the Hebrew Zohar, the Epistle of St. Jude, and is considered by some a very early draft of—or at least a critical influence on—the New Testament. This is perhaps the most important text not included in standard biblical Apocrypha, and includes the lost "Book of Noah," early references to a messiah as "Christ," and an accounting of the angels and subsequent creation of demons. The most significant part of this book is Enoch's vision of the Apocalypse. Credited as being only one of two prophets granted this sight, his version incorporates one very critical difference: instead of the righteous ascending into heaven and Earth turning into a place of punishment and damnation as in The Revelation of St. John, according to Enoch the wicked shall be cast out and the good will realize a literal heaven on Earth...
Various Enoch manuscripts and fragments have existed for years and have had wide influence on works ranging from John Dee's explorations in Enochian magic, to variant rituals attributed to the Freemasons, the Golden Dawn, and other secret, mystical societies. This current work—a translation of the I Ethiopic manuscript discovered by James Bruce in the late-1700s—has seen many different translations, but none as authoritative or complete as this edition by theologian, R.H. Charles.
Enoch, the prophet, is most often thought to be the pseudepigraphic author of the work—that is, the works of multiple authors were compiled under his authoritative name and attributed to him. He was one of few, along with St. Paul and Elijah, reputed to have ascended to heaven in mortal form, without dying.
R.H. Charles was a noted theologian and scholar, with many of his reference works remaining in print today, and still of superlative scholarly value. His book, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament in English remains a relevant work due mainly to his superior editorial skills. Charles died in 1931.
R.A. Gilbert, esoteric scholar and antiquarian bookseller, provides a new introduction describing the history of The Book of Enoch and delves into its historical and contemporary importance. He lives in Bristol, England.

The Book of Enoch the Prophet is the oldest known, existing mystical document and is referred to in the Hebrew Zohar, The Epistle of St. Jude, and other ancient books. Legend dates the text to antediluvian times, saved from the flood by Noah himself, while serious scholarship places its origin in the second century b.c.e., as old as ancient Sumeria and Babylon.
Providing insight into the foundation of Christianity and the pre-Christian Gnostics, the text is perhaps most remarkable for its significant deviation from the apocryphal story that appears in the Bible. The final Christian version of the apocalypse leaves the damned on a hellish earth, while welcoming the chosen to heaven. The Book of Enoch the Prophet draws a very different picture—upon the return of the Messiah, evil will be banished from the face of the earth, resulting in a heaven on earth.
A new introduction to this edition by esoteric scholar R.A. Gilbert places the book in context,
including an overview of the modern history of The Book of Enoch. It’s an Indiana Jones-like story: lost for thousands of years after being banned by the early Christians, the ancient manuscript was rediscovered in the late eighteenth century. This sparked research for other fragments, which were subsequently found and together revealed the complete ancient text, first translated into English and published in 1821.
