This short book is the work of Dr. Theophilus Goldridge Pinches (1856-1934), a respected historian and lecturer in Assyrian at University College, London. Originally published in 1906, this book, at the time, represented a complete up-to-date understanding of Mesopotamian literature. For its time, the book is eminently readable, and has a wealth of information on the Mesopotamian pantheon and religious practices.

The religion of the Babylonians and Assyrians was the polytheistic faith professed by the people inhabiting the Tigris and Euphrates valleys from what may be regarded as the dawn of history until the Christian era began, or, at least, until the inhabitants were brought under the influence of Christianity. The chronological period covered may be roughly estimated at about 5000 years.
